moderation overview
what moderators do, the philosophy behind community moderation, and what tools are available.
moderators keep communities healthy. it's volunteer work that matters.
your role
as a moderator, you're responsible for enforcing your sub's rules and maintaining the community culture. you have tools to remove content, ban users, and manage who participates. use them thoughtfully, as good moderation is about fairness, not control.
admin vs moderator
the person who created the sub is the admin. admins can do everything moderators can, plus manage sub settings, add/remove moderators, and transfer ownership. moderators handle day-to-day moderation: reviewing reports, removing content, and banning users.
moderation tools
- reports: review content that members have flagged
- hidden content: see and restore content that has been removed
- bans: manage who is and isn't allowed to participate
- members: view and manage member access
- settings: configure the sub description, rules, and access (admin only)
- moderators: add or remove moderators (admin only)
when in doubt
if you're unsure whether something violates your rules, err toward leaving it and discussing it with other moderators. heavy-handed moderation drives people away; light-touch moderation builds trust.
